That is the focus of the new worship series Demystified Jesus: an exploration of Jesus and his teachings through the lens of the book of John.

If God accepts and invites us to come as we are, how will you or I respond? The curtain has been lifted will we get on stage and become a part of the play or just sit there?

Moses, Guitar Hero, and You.

This week Tyler is playing Guitar Hero. I mean, preaching about Guitar Hero. Or maybe he’s preaching about Moses and God’s desire to use us, and will be talking about Guitar Hero. Hope that you can come and be here to hear him speak and to leave with something else he’s talking about: a full stomach. That’s right, it’s time for our monthly connections lunch again, so stick around after worship and share food with old friends and new as we get to know each other better. If you want a better idea of what Tyler is going to preaching about, you can read Exodus 3:6-10; Exodus 5:22-23; Exodus 32:7-14; and Exodus 32:31-32. Oh, and practice up on your Guitar Hero.

2:03:25 PM: What do we do with the “oddballs” around us? Those who don’t fit in, no matter what we do

2:05:46 PM: Benjamin Button starts with an image of Benjamin’s father leaving him on a doorstep because he’s an oddball. Is this how we usually react?

2:05:53 PM: Do we reject oddballs?

2:07:46 PM: Psalm 139:13-14: God’s workmanship is marvelous.

2:08:46 PM: “God don’t make no junk” -Ethel Waters. We are wonderfully complex, knit together in a wonderful way.

“The Curious Case of Benjamin Button”

We’re continuing our annual God at the movies series this week with a message that looks at “The Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Benjamin Button was certainly an oddball, and we’re going to look at whether oddballs have a place in the kingdom of God and whether God can work through oddballs. We hope you’ll join us as we worship.

This Sunday we begin a new series of messages for our yearly Finding God @ the Movies series which explores spiritual and social themes being expressed in current movies. This year our series is Oddballs, Outsiders, Dreamsers and Outkasts. We’ll be exploring how our culture and scripture views those who don’t fit the mold or follow conventional wisdom.

1:58:06 PM: Have you seen the Help Wanted section in the newspaper? It hardly exists anymore.

1:59:30 PM: Nehemiah faced a challenge, and the way he responded is very different from the way we usually respond to challenges.

1:59:39 PM: Nehemiah 3:1-18

2:03:44 PM: This passage is full of Hebrew names that can throw us off, but if we can keep our focus, there is a great message here.

2:06:10 PM: We’re in a crisis. People losing their jobs and their houses. What can we learn from Nehemiah and the crisis he faced?

2:07:18 PM: We need to ask “How does God want me to respond in this troubled time?” Not “What do I need to do to get ahead?

2:09:48 PM: In this passage we see all kinds of people involved in the rebuilding of the wall. It wasn’t just one kind of person.

2:11:24 PM: The wall of Jerusalem needed to be rebuilt, and everyone came together to do it. (Kind of like an Amish barn raising.)

2:14:10 PM: We need to do the same thing. Our culture is all about getting ours and making sure we get what we need.

2:15:59 PM: But we need to break the cultural norm and look out for the good of others first.

2:17:29 PM: Out of many, come one. Are we going to live this out, are we going to live like we’re an army of one?

2:18:46 PM: We need to look at the Scriptures, get back to what the Scripture is calling us to do.

2:20:33 PM: How is it that this diverse group of people in Nehemiah are drawn together as one?

2:21:56 PM: We have lost our way culturally and in the church by pursuing everything but the common good.

2:23:04 PM: There are all kinds of tasks being done in this passage of Nehemiah, people had to do things they weren’t used to.

2:20:59 PM: God will pour out God’s spirit on all people…there will be dreams and visions and prophesy…

2:23:41 PM: God gives us dreams that are about the possibility that God has for our world. Dreams about God doing incredible things through us.

2:24:29 PM: God’s mission and purpose is expressed in our lives when we dream

2:25:39 PM: Often times our families, friends, and churches smash our dreams.
