Thank you for taking to step towards being ‘the church’ that we say we are. I am so excited about this opportunity to serve this family. Chad and I went with Andre this afternoon to meet them. What an amazing experience! I absolutely love them already. They are so warm and friendly, putting blankets on the chairs and inviting us to sit. They even gave us all handmade shirts. It was touching. They were so thankful and their kids were adorable. Their apartment was modest but well furnished.

I am excited for you all to meet them. We were able to talk via a phone translator and found that their primary needs are clothes (Mens small-medium, approx 5’4″, 140 lbs, women’s small and children’s variety but small) shoes (probably no larger than size 8 or 9 and children’s variety) and especially a vacuum. (Andre feel free to describe this better).

I just emailed Bethany regarding their “how to be a tutor” training and am hoping to have some possible dates for you all soon. I think this will be the critical next step in knowing how to help and having the tools to do so… especially as we wait for them to begin ESL classes

There are always ways to help out at Mosaic Life. If you’re looking for something, just let us know. We could use more help with set-up and take down. There are opportunities to volunteer with Mosaic Kids and Youth. We need people who can run a sound board to do the audio during worship. Don’t know how to do that? We can teach you. Do you consider yourself a twitter guru? Maybe you could take a turn live-tweeting our worship. Love cleaning? You could give a couple of hours to help clean the space. Can you use a computer? You can help by volunteering with our Michigan Works! access point. We rely on volunteers to keep things going here at Mosaic, and we would love it if you were part of that. Not only are these great ways to help out, they are great ways to get connected with other people at Mosaic.

Thanks to all the volunteers who give so much to the ministry of Mosaic Life.

So, im not really sure what i expected from a Christian conference on Community Development. If im going to be honest, i guess i expected some watered-down, evangelistic approach to sparking a an old fashioned community revival. Harsh, I know. I guess growing up in a very conservative, close-minded small town still gets the better of me sometimes.

That description is no where near accurate in terms of my real experience. The bottom line is that this experience sparked an “old-fashioned revival” in me. I didn’t expect to feel the presence of God in worship every day or to be challenged in my faith by people i had never even heard of. I wasn’t prepared to be in a room filled with the most diverse group of professionals I have ever seen, who were all passionate about the kind of intrinsic community transformation that I have spent the last several years studying and dreaming about being a part of. This conference also provided loads of practical, relevant information so that I didn’t just sit and discuss theory, but walked away every day with tools that could be incorporated into my professional, personal and spiritual life immediately.

The message that came through the clearest to me during the 3 1/2 days of conference was that everything we do must be done in love. Real, honest love for other people and for all God’s creation must be at the core of every word, every act of service, and every attempt at positive change. Period. No excuses. It is from this life-altering love that all else flows: the ability to hear God’s lead, the desire to listen, and the passion to serve those who are hurting. Love is more than a fluffy word or an excuse but is instead what leads to grace and is how others see Christ in us.

This experience has made a lasting impact on me and attending future CCDA conferences will be a priority.

Last week, myself and two others from Mosaic Life/Grand Rapids Dreams went to the annual Christian Community Development Association (CCDA) conference. CCDA has been around for 20 years, and exists to help organizations do community development. It was great to learn from people who have been doing community development, community organizing, and community transformation for years in a variety of different settings. If I could sum up the conference in one word, it would be “listen”. CCDA talks a lot about Asset Based Community Development (ABCD), and that starts with listening to people’s hopes and dreams, and then using the assets that are already in the community to realize those hopes and dreams. This comes from the understanding that people know their communities and know what their communities need. Once projects or initiatives have been put in place, it is important to listen to the community to find out how well the projects are working.

In addition to being educational, the CCDA conference was a very inspirational event for me. It was wonderful to hear the stories and experiences of those who have been in this field longer than I have. It was encouraging to know that we can make a difference in the community. It was uplifting to know that even when we face setbacks there are many ways to push through them or work around them. It’s such a blessing to know that there is a wealth of knowledge out there from those who have gone before.

This was the first time that our tribe has had a large group at the CCDA conference. It’s great to know that even in our own tribe, we are not alone in seeking to transform the communities in which we’re present.

CCDA is also a great place to meet people. I reconnected with a lot of people that I know from other conferences or other encounters, and I met new people who have the same passion and dreams as I have. I know that as my network continues to grow, I will have a wealth of people to draw on for support and insight. I look forward to supporting others who are doing kingdom work and sharing my insights with my friends doing community development.

If I have one bit of advice to share with anyone, no matter what context they’re in, I would say “be present”. Be fully where you are, that you are able to hear what the people around you are telling you and that you can feel their emotions. Being more present in all aspects of life will help all of us as we seek to follow the example of Christ and show love to those around us.

Blessings,

Steve

Mosaic held it’s 5th Faith in Action Sunday this week, in conjunction with the national Faith in Action Sunday. Volunteers from Mosaic did yardwork, helped remodel a kitchen, removed tree bags, and did street and alley clean up. We are regularly involved in serving with the community, but twice a year we cancel worship services to take our faith to the streets as a faith community. We seek to let God’s love show through our actions every day, and this twice a year event is a great way to do that collectively. Check out the pics here.

It’s that time of year again! We will have a booth at the Eastown Street Fair this Saturday. We need you to help with temporary tattoos, simple balloon animals, or maybe face painting. If you’re not sure you can do that, don’t worry, we can teach anyone a few simple balloon animals in a few minutes. If you didn’t get a chance to sign up Sunday, please email SteveW (at) mosaiclife.org and let him know which shifts you can work. Shifts are 8-11, 11-2, 2-5, and 5-8. Thanks!
